Beck’s Birth Story
Sunday, November 2, 2008 -
I woke up Sunday morning feeling restless. The house was clean, for the most part. There were some spots on our bathroom ceiling that had been bugging me for months, so I got out the stepladder and wiped down the ceiling (maybe this was me “nesting”). I wanted to go to Costco to stock up on food, drinks and supplies, so I told Paul I was going to shower and that we should be at Costco when it opened at 10:00 a.m. He agreed. On the drive there, I was feeling out of it…still very restless, even though we were getting things done. I even commented to Paul that I felt sort of depressed. I thought maybe this meant my hormones were shifting and that something might be happening in the near future.
We returned home and put away the stuff we purchased. I ate a snack and took a quick nap. I had a massage scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Mani Celesti. I went and it was wonderfully relaxing. Heather worked on the pressure points that are supposed to speed up labor.
Paul played hockey on Sunday night. He left around 8:30 p.m. I went to bed around 9:30 or 10:00 p.m. I woke up around 11:45 p.m. Paul was home and had showered and was on the computer winding down from the game. I went to the bathroom and noticed some unusual wetness, but not enough to make me think “my water broke.” I went back to bed and still felt the wetness, so I went back down to the bathroom…this time thinking “huh, maybe my water broke…”. I went back to bed to think, and decided “yup, something is going on” so I went back downstairs to tell Paul. He later told me he thought, “man…she’s REALLY pregnant…she’s been to the bathroom 3 times in 10 minutes.” I stood in the doorway until Paul looked up and then said something like “ummm…I think my water might have broken…”. I think the percentage of women whose water spontaneously breaks is only about 8-10% and my mom’s water didn’t break during any of her 4 labors (the doctor broke it while she was well into labor), so I was very surprised that this was how things started.
