Weight and smiles and stuff.
I know, I know, you want more pictures. I have not yet learned to transfer the pictures from our camera to our computer (and I'm sure it's a simple as plugging in a cord and clicking the mouse), which means it's Paul's job to post pictures, and he's a busy man with the working full time and the helping me care for two kids gig. I promise more pictures are forthcoming, but in the meantime, let's get to know Nolan a little bit...
He was 8 pounds, 7 ounces at birth. He lost weight (totally normal) and was 7 pounds, 11 ounces (or maybe 7 pounds, 15 ounces?) at his two day check-up . At his next check-up 8 days later, he was 8 pounds, 11 ounces. And at his most recent check-up (lots of check-ups in the first few weeks, no?), he was 9 pounds, 4.5 ounces. I'm pretty sure he's close to 10 pounds by now.
He cries a lot more than Beck, but the apparent trade-off is that he's already smiling and cooing. I had to google it to make sure it was possible for babies to smile and coo at 3 weeks, which is when he started doing it sort of regularly, and google tells me it's possible. When I put him down on a blanket and smile and talk to him, he often reciprocates, as long as he's not working on getting some of those gas bubbles out. His gas/poop faces are HILARIOUS, and they come along with some great grunting. I keep wanting to get this on video, but I'm doubtful that any of you are that interested in his gastrointestinal activities.
He's got strawberry blond hair and eyelashes and a ruddy skin tone. He has way more hair than Beck, but it's so light that from a distance, he appears bald. At first, I thought he looked a lot like Paul (and just the other day I definitely saw Tracey (Paul's mom) in him), but lately, I've seen more of myself in him. I totally thought he had Paul's eyes, but yesterday Paul told me he for sure had my eyes. I've seen both of my brothers in him. I guess he's a good mix of the two of us.
I think he really likes Beck. He looks very interested when he hears Beck talking, and if Beck ever gets in his field of vision, he usually smiles. Beck is still adjusting to the changes around here. His latest shenanigan is to take down every book in his room, and empty all of his toys on to the floor. I call it Hurricane Beck. It's so annoying, but I keep telling myself that if this is the worst he's going to do, I can take it. He always tries to give Nolan a pacifier, or cover him with a blanket, and always tells him "it'sokit'sokit'sok" when he cries. It will be interesting to see how their brotherly relationship develops.

Maybe I can do this.
Wow. Nolan is 3 weeks and 2 days old. It's gone soooo fast, but his birth date seems like an eternity ago. Someone once told me that when you have a newborn (or maybe just kids in general), the minutes take forever but the days fly by. That seems about right to me. The past 3 weeks have been...challenging. Beck was a super easy baby. EASY. Really really laid back, and rarely cried. Nolan is...different. He needs to be held a lot more, he nurses a lot, but is kind of picky about it, and until today, he wanted nothing to do with the many wonderful infant seating options we have for him. Today, though, the swing! It worked! He's taking his second nap in it as I type this. Beck is still sleeping, so I thought I better take the opportunity to write a little. He's going to wake up any minute, so I'm going to give you some bullet points of our lives since Nolan arrived.
- crying! it took me a while to accept that babies cry. sometimes for no apparent reason.
- co-sleeping. not our plan, but it's working for now, and i'm getting a decent amount of sleep at night.
- "mama do it" "daddy do it" "me do it" - beck is adjusting to a new little brother, and a change in his day care. paul was home for 2 weeks, basically caring for beck around the clock, and i think he has a renewed appreciation for stay-at-home-parents!
- gas! poor nolan seems to swallow a ton of air when he nurses, which causes gas in his tummy, which probably has a lot to do with the crying. it seems to be improving, though.
- failure to cloth diaper. not only have i not been using cloth diapers on nolan, but beck has also been in disposables the majority of the past 3 weeks. beck is back in cloth today, and i'll tackle cloth diapering a newborn...hmmm, not sure when, but it's still my plan.
- cabin fever! it's been unusually cold and snowy, but the temperature is back up, and i'm ready to get outside and start walking.
Well, I think that's good for now. We're surviving this family of 4 thing and I'm hopeful that things will continue to get easier.
